1. Although unknown to most, Santa Claus’ suit was inspired by ‘Hot Shot Red & white’. With delivery so reliable, Santa felt compelled to have the same trusted reputation, so he modeled his signature wardrobe after Hot Shot Delivery!

2. Both Hot Shot and Santa Claus use the latest & greatest in tracking technology. Santa was so impressed by Hot Shot’s state-of-the-art tracker that he started using a system modeled after it. Hot Shot’s tracking system lets customers know exactly where their packages are at all times, and Santa figured he could make use of this himself.

3. Hot Shot and Santa both deliver joy during the holiday season! From presents, to treats and sweets, only Hot Shot and Santa can quickly deliver the goods spreading holiday cheer from door to door (or chimney to chimney).

4. With hundreds of staff and delivery drivers, Hot Shot is well-equipped with plenty of man power to ensure that everyone gets their holiday merriment. When Santa noticed how efficient Hot Shot’s staff was, he promptly hired elves and trained them to transport and process items, just like the Hot Shot team.

5. Hot Shot Delivery has a fleet of quick & reliable transportation to get packages delivered as quickly as possible. Santa knew he needed to be as quick as the Hot Shot Delivery team, so he invested in a sleigh and his reindeer. Although not as fancy as a Hot Shot Delivery vehicle, it would just have to do.

6. Everyone knows that Santa works 24/7 in order to make it all the way around the world at all the right times to get kids around the world their presents on time. Hot Shot has deliveries to make to kids, adults and well, everyone! So Hot Shot works around the clock, 24/7 to make sure every package is in the right hands on time, no matter how big or small.

7. Kris Kringle, Papa Noel, St. Nick…all very different names, but all associated to the one and only Santa Claus. Just like Hot Shot’s staff are known as many different things; courier, messenger, delivery driver…all have one purpose, and that’s to satisfy customers during this holiday season!

May this holiday season be filled with warmth, laughter and love. From our family to yours, happy holidays!

Happy Thanksgiving from our family at Hot Shot Delivery to you and yours! As the Holiday Season fast approaches, we find ourselves rushing around, often times more so than usual. Here at our fine Houston Courier Service, rushing around is what we do for a living. Hot Shot Delivery does those pesky little errands so you don’t have to. When we’re not delivering life saving medical equipment or important legal documents, you might find one of our professional uniformed couriers delivering a lunch for an office party, or even picking up and delivering your newest outfit from your finest Galleria department store.

Some of our favorite Thanksgiving memories are a little more personal. At Hot Shot Delivery, Inc. we are truly a family. We have a lot of pride in what we do and we take care of who we work with, because they take care of our customers. The inspiration for this week’s blog came from the spirit of Thanksgiving and a note our Controller, Phil, sent me about “how thankful he is for the wonderful work and assistance that Rose and the Hot Shot Delivery customer service offer.” It was also sparked by our Office Manager, Amanda, recently recalling coming into our office when the air was full of the aroma of pumpkin pies. That brought me back to one of my favorite Thanksgiving memories.

In 2005, during my first Thanksgiving as President of Hot Shot Delivery, my wife and I had an idea to start a new tradition: to bake 175 homemade pumpkin pies the day before Thanksgiving for the Hot Shot Delivery family! That’s right, just the two of us, in our church’s kitchen, making 175 homemade pumpkin pies in one day.

Lots of flour, sugar, laughter, and well, nine hours later, we had 175 wonderful, individually boxed, homemade pumpkin pies. It was a nice treat for all of our staff, drivers and their families. My wife, being in the restaurant business, gave all of her staff pies as well. We had fun and were delighted to add some joy to the tables of those who do such a great job for us each and every day. However, I think we will leave the pie making up to those that are best at it from here on out.

From all of us at Hot Shot Delivery, thank you for your trust and support. As our friend, customer, or prospective customer, we sincerely appreciate you. Please remember that there are many that do not have anyone to share this holiday with, so open your heart, your home, or if you are able, your wallet. Or, simply give your smile or time. Also be sure to also thank a soldier, their family, and the first responders for keeping us all safe.

Happy Thanksgiving from all of us at Hot Shot Delivery!

Gratefully,
Eric

Pink is everywhere and for good reason: October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Following behind skin cancer, breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among U.S. Women. Breast cancer makes up for 1 in 4 cases of cancer found in women. 70-80% of breast cancers occur in women who have no family history of breast cancer. These occur due to genetic abnormalities that happen as a result of the aging process and life in general, rather than inherited mutations.

The month of October is a reminder that breast cancer awareness is much needed. Great progress has been made in research in the area of breast cancer. According to breastcancer.org, as of 2010, there were more than 2.5 million breast cancer survivors in the United States. I am proud and honored to know a few of these many survivors and will continue to support the awareness of this worthwhile cause.

Hot Shot Delivery is blessed to sit in the heart of one of the largest medical cities in the U.S. Our location has given us the opportunity to take part in all sorts of medical related deliveries. For example, we have the opportunity daily to deliver medical genetic samples that are used by physicians to determine the health of the unborn, the severity of a disease, or to determine if an organ donor is a proper match. This is a responsibly that we do not take lightly.

Serving as Houston’s Courier to the medical community comes with great reward and great responsibility, but occasionally we get a good laugh out of it. One day I went home to tell my kids about the very important new study that we were assisting with. We were responsible for picking up soiled diapers and delivering them to a laboratory for testing. To this day, my kids get a kick out of telling people that we deliver poopy diapers.

Today, as we have always done, we “deliver Houston” and make sure that each and every one of our deliveries gets handled with the respect and attention it deserves. After all, we are not just delivering an envelope, a box, or a sample. Sometimes, we are delivering a life!

Until next time,
Eric

Hot Shot Delivery and all of our employees, contractors and family hope that you had a very happy and healthy 4th of July. We hope that you were able to beat the heat as you enjoyed this wonderful holiday weekend. Although I was out of town spending some vacation time with my great family, many of our team spent the 4th at Houston’s annual Freedom Over Texas event.

Hot Shot Delivery had the pleasure of delivering several of the HD Video Cameras and equipment that are used by the media outlets that covered this extraordinary patriotic celebration. And that’s only one example of the amazing things that Hot Shot has the opportunity to deliver. Many people may think that a courier/delivery company only delivers boxes, envelopes and papers. Don’t get me wrong, we do tons of work for the business sector and have deliveries all day every day that include envelopes, boxes and papers. But, we also provide medical delivery services, delivering lifesaving medical devices like heart valves, pacemakers, pharmaceuticals, hospital monitors and much more. We even deliver Live Lobsters! There really is no limit to our delivery capabilities.

As we settle in to this hot and very dry summer, be sure to stay cool, hydrate and be thankful for the freedom that we have as Americans. God Bless America and Our Soldiers.

Spring is in the air and we are having some great weather here in Houston. It’s been a bit windy, but it’s been great outside. Spring is a time for new beginnings and it always serves as a reminder for us at Hot Shot to reconnect and give back to our local charities. We support several local charites and we hope to highlight all of them through this outlet over the next few months.

May 1st is Lemonade Day! What is Lemonade Day?

Lemonade Day is a part of Prepared 4 Life, a non-profit that provides fun, proactive and experiential programs infused with life skills, character education and entrepreneurship. Born in Houston in 2007, Lemonade Day was inspired by the lessons local entrepreneur and philanthropist Michael Holthouse taught his young daughter and her friend when they set-up a lemonade stand. Five years ago, instead of giving his daughter money to buy something, Michael Holthouse encouraged her to set goals and work for it. Who knew that what started as an innocent question from Michael Holthouse’s then 10-year-old daughter, Lissa, wanting to purchase a pet turtle, would turn into a life changing opportunity for hundreds of thousands of children across Houston and the country.

Lissa and a friend set up a lemonade stand, and learned a lot along the way. Michael realized that there were important lessons in mentoring and business that he was able to share with his daughter that day. That one day sitting in the driveway with his daughter inspired what is now known as Lemonade Day. It is day of educating and empowering youth to have a dream and pursue it.

It is my belief that the lessons learned through Lemonade Day will help these young men and women become the business leaders of the future. So, on Sunday May 1st, look for Lemonade Stands and support these kids in their business venture.

Recently, a friend of mine told me a story that I thought I would pass along. He and his family were sound asleep in their beds when they were abruptly awoken to their home security system in full panic mode. All of the sudden, he was forced to be at his most alert state and ready to defend his family from the foe that tripped his alarm. When you have kids, the idea of staying behind your locked bedroom door to see what the police find when they get there is not really an option. His first thought was to get to his children and he was practically racing his wife to their rooms. Your safety often takes a backseat when you are faced with the need to protect your helpless children from harm. So, he and his wife get to their kids and then… well, I will finish this story a little later in my post.

The point is, this story really got me thinking. In my home, I feel secure and at ease and this is the type of situation that can make you feel like your “peace of mind” is not truly warranted. It also made me realize all of the other areas in life where people have a false sense of security. Now, this is not meant to scare anyone. That is not my desire. However, it’s meant to educate and inform you of the right questions to ask to make sure you are dealing with a company that keeps your security in mind.

A few years ago, the City of Houston implemented a towing program to help to clear the roads of accidents faster. Many cities around the US incorporated similar programs and were met with success and controversy all at the same time. One of the concerns that arose was regarding the Towing Companies that were chosen by the city to clear these accidents. Many of the cities that ran this program did not do proper background checks, insurance checks and licensing checks on these companies. These tow truck drivers had access to your vehicle, your personal information and often would have to escort you and your family to a different destination. It was found that many of them were not licensed, had no insurance and in many cases had extensive criminal backgrounds. This is not the type of situation that your city should put you in. Many of these programs are no longer in existence due to the problems that occurred. One way to avoid this is to work with companies that can provide proof of background checks, proof of insurance and proper licensing. And as always, when in doubt…ASK. It’s your right to know and their obligation to provide that information.

In my industry, it’s a shame how many people just trust their personal packages with companies that don’t do background checks, are not bonded, licensed, follow OSHA compliance or even check to make sure their drivers are insured. These packages are obviously important and time sensitive and in so many cases, never make it to their destination. The sad part is that the sender or the receiver can’t do much about it. This is an easy situation to avoid. Companies like my Houston Courier Service, can provide the proof you need to feel secure about your packages. Any company you work with should have this proof readily available to give you the peace of mind you need to feel that your belongings are safe when out of your hands. Paying a dollar or two more for a delivery from someone who has gone through the process of making sure your packages are safe is a no-brainer in my opinion.

Now, in a more personal area…your home. This is the area where you need to be the most alert. Work with companies that are in good standing with the Better Business Bureau. Work with companies that your friends can refer to you. You are letting people that you don’t know in to your private home and around your family. This includes your yard company, your cable company, your appliance company, repairs, carpet cleaning, etc… Be smart about who you let in to your home and be sure to stay on your toes the entire time they are there. Keep notice of all activity and don’t leave them in a room alone. Stay aware and stay safe and work with companies that have the safety and security of their customers as a top priority.

Now, to get back to the story of my friend and his tripped alarm in the middle of the night. After some discussions with the Security monitoring service and a little investigation, it turns out that a house fly was their “foe” ready to cause harm to the family. Apparently, that little fly flew right in front of their very sensitive motion detectors and the rest is history. The family is safe and got a good laugh out of the whole thing, but I can’t say the same for that poor house fly.

Until Next Time,

A little over 2 weeks ago, my uncle died. He was my mom’s brother. It has been really hard on our family, especially my mom. But, what hit me the hardest was the realization that the older I get, the more this is going to happen. As a child, deaths and funerals were rare for me and I never got used to the pain and sorrow that comes along with losing loved ones. I suppose that’s a really good thing though – having to lose people when you are young can be much worse. It was a sad day at the memorial, but also a joyful one for many reasons. We got to celebrate the life of my uncle and we were reunited with cousins, aunts, uncles, grandparents, etc…

I’m realizing that there are a few things that bring full families together – Weddings, Births and Funerals. All three are celebrations of life and occasions to come together with old stories, great memories and rekindled relationships. It is sad that it takes these major acts to keep many families in touch. People seem to be so busy these days that they forget the really important things in life. The really important things in life start with family. It is in the family that our roots take hold and from there we grow to be the person we are meant to become.

I’m very lucky to have the family that I do. We are close, we travel together, live in the same area, spend weekends and holidays together and I now run my father’s original business (A Houston Courier Company, Hot Shot Delivery). As an immediate family, we understand the importance of “family time” and we have a strong family bond. But rarely do we spend time with the extended family. I’d like to see that change.

I was watching television the other night and a line from one of the shows really hit home for me:

“Make a plan, set a goal, work towards it. But every now and then, look around, drink it in. Because, this is it. It might all be gone tomorrow.”

If everything were gone tomorrow, did you spend today doing the things that mean the most? It’s definitely something worth thinking about and possibly changing the way you do some things. I did a little exercise that I thought was pretty helpful. I took a piece of paper and drew a line in the middle of it to make two columns. In the left column, I made a list of the most important things in my life. In the right column, I made a list of the things I spend the most of my time doing. It was very interesting to see how the most important things in my life often took a backseat to the items in the right column.

As I close for the week, I’d like to dedicate this blog to my uncle and his life. I’d also like to send a message to my extended family, I hope that we can set a goal of spending more time together and work towards that goal. Because if it were all gone tomorrow, I would definitely miss those good times.

Should you do the same with your family?

Until Next Time,

Eric

I recently had the pleasure of taking a few days off to head down to Galveston to spend some time with my family and a few days away from the hustle and bustle of my Houston Same Day Delivery Company, Hot Shot Delivery. I can’t stress enough the importance of taking a vacation – even a short one – several times a year. It boosts your economic well being along with your mental well being. It’s not something to be taken lightly – vacations are a must and here are 5 reasons why:

1. Stress Reliever – Sure, traveling with 3 young daughters can be seen by some as stressful, but, to me, it is a great time away from the courier service office. It’s a change of pace, a new scenery and the opportunity to take a deep breath and go with the flow. People often underestimate the importance of this time away and put it off until it is too late. The stress can pile up and with no release, you begin to jeopardize your health.

2. Physical Health – Getting outside, breathing the fresh air, soaking up some Vitamin D and moving around for a few days is going to be better than being hunched over behind a big monitor that is probably too close to your eyes. Juggling deadlines, customer service, human resource issues and the many areas related to running a business is a mental and physical drain on your body. You need to hit the reset button every few months.

3. Economic Health – Not only for the tourist economy, but for your own pocketbook. Sounds odd to some I’m sure, but there is proof behind this concept. Often, when taking the time to get away, you actually free your brain from being bogged down by the daily operations of your business and get back to the free-flowing ideas of the vacationing right side of your brain. You also take the time to read new articles or books and get in to discussions about business ideas without worrying about missing a deadline or dealing with a daily crisis. Some of my most profitable ideas have come when fishing with my dad in the middle of nowhere. You can’t always get that type of brainstorming in a room full of whiteboards and suits.

4. Family Time – I know that you are busy in your own life, but combine that with the lives of your spouse and your kids. My family alone is bouncing back and forth between schools, dancing, day care and tons of other extracurricular activities. I’m lucky to get dedicated time with one of my daughters at a time, much less all three and my wife. However, on a vacation, there is nothing else to do but spend time together. These are the memories that your children will have and think fondly of as they age. This should be a huge priority for you, if you want to maintain the sanity and love within your tight knit group.

The Beauty of A Vacation

5. Fun – Not much to explain here. Getting away is fun. Trying new things, re-doing old things, catching up with friends, making new friends… whatever. Get out there and do it.

As I close, I think of the fond memories from my short trip to Galveston, fishing trips with my dad, our recent trip to Disney and the many more that are in our future. Be sure to cherish this time with your family and don’t deny yourself the chance to unwind, relax and recharge. You will thank yourself later.

Until Next Time,

13 years ago, a black lab puppy of 6 weeks old came in to my life. We named him Jax and have had a lifetime of wonderful memories with our pal. For those of you who have had a lab, you will agree that they are the most patient, loyal and loving dogs, not to mention, very smart. That’s exactly the kind of dog that Jax was, even to the end. And, as he lost his battle with cancer, he still managed to put our family first in his list of concerns and cares.

Jax and My Girls

I began to realize that Jax was with me through all of the most important moments of my life. Marrying my wife, having each of my kids, taking over the family courier business, graduating from college, everything. Jax, silently in the background, was a pillar of support, unconditional love and my biggest fan.

Having to bury Jax was probably one of the most miserable experiences that I’ve had in a long time. I still expect him to be waiting for me when I get home, and that hurts the most. The truth is he’s probably the best dog I’ve ever had. He was there for my wife when she needed him. He was always there for me too and has been such a good member of the Donaldson family.

Probably what I miss the most are my talks with him when he would look at me with those big sad eyes and let me know he understood. Not something that you can easily replace. Jax was a great friend and companion and I know someday we will meet again. I will miss you my old friend.

Until Next Time,

Eric

All I can say is wow…I’m “mom” this week while my wife cares for our newborn baby, Samantha. My other girls, as excited as they are about their new baby sister, continue to have very busy lives that require the Donaldson Shuttle bus to depart constantly from our home base.

Like a scene from Driving Miss Daisy, I carefully drive as they sit in the back and are carted around town to 2 different schools, dance lessons, sleep overs, sporting events and a myriad of other after school activities. I find humor in this because I run a Courier company that delivers “time-sensitive packages” but can’t imagine having to manage this eventful process every day (but in my defense, my delivery packages don’t know every Hannah Montana song).

What’s amazing to me is that not only does she normally do all of this for our daughters, but my wife has a job of her own as well. So, my blog this week is all about how great moms are. It’s time to give them more credit for what they manage, how busy they are and how they make it look so seamless.

The Donaldson Ladies

So, thank you to my wife for being such a great mom and making it look so easy. I know that it is a handful and I am forever grateful for all of your sacrifices. And, thank you to my mother for all of her sacrifices over the years. I understand how much work and love it takes to keep a family going and that strength, devotion and patience will pay off for generations.

Until Next Time,
Eric
